Severe Floods in Australia Result in Heavy Damage

In early January, the worst flood in years destroyed many homes and businesses in Brisbane, Australia. The storm left 970 people whose homes are no longer existent trying to find temporary shelter. Debris is currently covering streets in the area and as a result, Brisbane’s city council has made it their first priority to have volunteers clear roads in order for them to be accessible again. The tricky thing about floods is that it’s difficult to prevent such damage from being done to property. Aside from living in areas with low amounts of rainfall (which even then can be ineffective since these regions also experience the occasional flood) there are some things you can do to be better prepared to face natural disasters of this sort. For instance, elevating electrical wiring in buildings (as well as washers and dryers), purchasing flood insurance, and even elevating your entire home.
