These two articles talk about the Earthquake in Haiti that was the biggest in terms of casualties in a long while. An important part was about more of the problems that were not as obvious as just the physical destruction of the massive earthquake. It talks about how Haiti is by far the poorest country in the Western hemisphere and how roughly 4 out of 5 people live in poverty. Other problems included the collapse of their government and how elections had to be postponed. The earthquake did more than destroy the country but also destroyed the people’s livelihood. I just returned from Haiti last week and I can tell you first hand the destruction down there is unimaginable and the poverty is truly indescribable. Even before the earthquake there was tons of poverty due to a lot of environmental concerns such as deforestation and due to the location of the island, which is a very vulnerable spot.
